Time to Refocus Our Unemployed Lives

103 12
I went to college in the Rocky Mountains.
Gorgeous and pristine.
The weather was crisp and sweet as a freshly picked Fuji apple.
The flesh of the fruit melting in your mouth as you chewed; the flavors developing with each bite as you gazed into the sky above at snows first fall, dreaming of the first lift to the top of your favorite slope at Season's start.
Then it was time for Organic Chemistry.
Time to focus.
I was Pre-Med.
Focus on was.
As that fateful winter passed and Spring Term commenced, the snow melted away once again and the icicles from the A-framed roofs of the solid red-bricked dorms began to hang like unpredictable daggers waiting to take aim at my would-be career.
As the Seasons changed, so did my course of study.
Time to focus.
Focus on deep shades of green ivy vines growing up the sides of those solid red-bricked dorms sprouting up in every direction not knowing where each vine's path would lead or eventually end.
I loved Psychology.
I loved Physiology.
I took to the subject-matter quite quickly and made fairly decent strides.
My lab work was recognized by the Professor and the Department and my work was succeeding.
I was making progress.
Then the Professor committed suicide and totally killed my hopes and wishes for a Psychology Career as well.
It also killed my grades.
Time to refocus.
Again.
And Again.
I liked Education.
I was placed in several classrooms, both for Mainstream and Special Needs.
I liked them; they liked me.
Then I got wrapped up in the politics of the educational system as a whole and...
Focus.
Choices.
Balance.
Tradeoffs.
Dashed hopes & empty promises--kind of like right now.
Today.
This second.
As we contemplate our future and what course to take and what ivy vine to follow, we are reminded by our past that life is a cycle of events that oftentimes gets repeated, and sometimes against our will.
We must never lose focus.
As things change direction, be flexible and bend without breaking or falling like those icicles of old.
Just step out of the way and let them pass to shatter innocently.
If you feel your surroundings overwhelm you as I have, do what is best and right for you.
Listen and welcome suggestions, comments and ideas.
Do some soul-searching and ask questions.
We have self-control and can empower ourselves to do wondrous things.
Class is in session, afresh.
Let us focus.
