How to Find Who a House Is Registered To?

    • 1). Research your county tax office. In most cases, you can find out who the house is registered to online. Search for "GIS Mapping" plus the name of the county where the house is located, and it will pull up the county website. For instance, if the house is in Orange County, NC, from the website's main page, click on "Online Services." Under the "For Businesses" section, select "Search GIS Maps and Land Records." Enter the street address to see the owner information.

    • 2). Visit your register of county deeds office. If you are having trouble finding the registration data online, it is best to visit the register of county deeds office in the county where the house is located. Give the deeds office the address and they will research the deed, which lists the owner. The address for your register of county deeds office should be listed on the county site.

    • 3). Use a title search company (see Resources section). The title search company can identify the owner of a property, but will generally charge you for their service.
