What is a depression?No, not what is depression but what is a depression? A depression is a hollowing out of a somewhat smooth surface.
The bottom of the depression is below the surface of the main surface.
A depression in a road could be called a pothole or a rut and can cause serious damage to a vehicle's alignment.
A depression out in the desert has the potential of saving a life if it were to collect rain water.
I once had a depression in a muscle indicating a process of atrophying taking place.
So a depression can be dangerous, can be beneficial, and can be a valuable warning to take some action.
As we apply this perspective to depression as it relates to our emotional life we can see how the same three guidelines are appropriate.
There's no lack of evidence as to the damage that sustained depression can cause to an individual, family, career and finances.
A life that hits pothole after pothole gets severely misaligned and will wear out very quickly.
Depression as something beneficial is a little less publicized.
When you see our emotions as a guidance system however, depression, if visited for short periods of time can be like a quick sip at the drinking fountain that quickly reminds us that we are off course from that which brings us joy and keeps us healthy.
Sadness and melancholy are a natural byproduct of living in a world where there is constant pressure and survival energy permeates the ethers.
To feel these emotions gives us a reference point and comparison to what joy and fulfillment is like.
When feelings of sadness turn to hopelessness however and inertia begins to set it, then your oil light will be flashing telling you to pull over and look under the hood!Depression is a warning sign that other systems will be compromised if the appropriate action is not taken.
So what is the appropriate action? Drugs will only alter the body's chemical reactions that have become out of alignment because of the habitual stage of destructive beliefs and feelings you have been having.
Feelings create chemical changes in our physiology.
Sadness and despair over long periods of time create certain chemicals being released within our bodies that we soon become addicted to.
Joy, happiness, and enthusiasm, felt over long periods of time create other chemical reactions within our bodies that we also become addicted to.
There is an abundance of scientific research proving this.
One fascinating read is Bruce Lipton's "Biology of Belief.
" I believe the appropriate action is to take a look within you; your emotional, mental, and spiritual you.
Drugs will NEVER heal the cause of depression.
They may be beneficial as short-term band-aid to get an individual through a crisis, but in the long term journey, healing depression will only come from your choice to choose differently.
Depending on where you are at in your journey of depression, whether you are in the guidance, warning signs, or systems-are-failing phase, you get the opportunity to strengthen your muscle of will.
Your will to live and contribute to life in a constructive way is essential to you choosing to place your attention on empowering things or projects that illicit joy or excitement instead of seeing what's not working that creates feelings of hopelessness.
Focusing on the "lack" side of life or what's not showing up will only perpetuate more of what is in your life that keeps you feeling depressed!It is an insidious cycle that I know all too well and made the choice years ago to heal not to mask over.
Keep these points in mind if you are ready to see depression in a new light: o focus on what you are grateful for and that which brings you joy.
o take the smallest steps of action towards fulfilling your heart desires that you believe is within your reach.
This willassist you in feeling good about yourself.
o move your body!Walk, dance, do yoga! Physical stagnation only adds to the low, toxic energy.
o find emotional support that will empower you, not NUMB you.
o know that your life is an essential piece to the universal picture of raising the consciousness of humanity - without you living a joy-filled life, it's not going to happen.
We all need your light and your love being expressed out in the world! I do not treat this topic lightly.
I hold it with great care and love for in that energy, unlike the energy of a drug, true healing can take place.
Not overnight, maybe not in a month or a few months, but eventually with perseverance the power is within you to pull yourself out of the depression that you are in and begin to walk again on the smooth surface of the road of living!
