Sewing a Stuffed Spiral
- 1). Measure and draw two equal sized rectangles onto the fabric, using a ruler and pencil. Draw long, wide rectangles for a larger spiral or short, skinny rectangles for a smaller spiral. Make the long and short ends of the rectangles ½-inch wider for the sewing seam allowance.
- 2). Cut out the two rectangles with scissors.
- 3). Lay one rectangle directly on top of the other with both rectangles' edges lined up and the printed sides of both pieces facing each other. Sew the long ends and one short end together with a sewing machine, using ½-inch seam allowances.
- 4). Turn the piece inside out. Fill with stuffing.
- 5). Cut a piece of wire that matches the length of the rectangular piece with wire cutters. Use the pliers to turn the ends of the wire inward to avoid sharp points.
- 6). Insert the wire into the opening in the rectangular piece. Gently push it through the stuffing. Use your hands to smooth out any bulges. Stop pushing the wire when its end reaches the sewn bottom of the rectangle.
- 7). Tuck ½-inch on the front and back edges of the opening, making them as flat as possible. Cut a long piece of sewing thread, tie a large knot in the end and thread the needle. Insert the needle underneath the folded bottom edge, beside the long side seam. Guide the needle out of the fabric. Insert the needle into the folded bottom edge, pulling it out ¼-inch away. Insert the needle into the folded top edge directly across from its position on the folded bottom edge. Bring the needle out ¼-inch away before inserting it again into the folded bottom edge. Continue sewing this slip-stitch until you reach the end of the opening. Sew five stitches back in the opposite direction and cut the remaining thread.
- 8). Bend the rectangular piece into a spiral shape.
