Dear Politician Intern - I"d Say You Have A Lot to Learn
Not long ago, I was sitting in a group of local political movers and shakers, all of which postured up their so-called "EQ" or Emotional Quotient or emotional IQ.
Yes, they were busy congratulating each other on the fiefdoms they ran; the school board, the airport authority, the city council, the transit system, chamber of commerce, the police department, and the local bank, boys and girls club, and Rotary Club.
They are wore suit and ties, not sure why, no need to be formal, everyone already knows everyone else but, perhaps since it was a breakfast meeting and they were all on their way to work shortly after to play the part in some sick Hollywood B-Movie - pretending to be the leaders they purport.
Still, I noted a couple of cute good-looking interns there as well, sitting in the back, looking out of place, representing their State and Federal representatives.
Of course, the old men in the group were busy winking at them alright, and what a sorry state of affairs that was, how dishonorable, I mean keep it in the pants already - emotional IQ - Not! Indeed, I reflected on a 1000 meetings I'd attended before, how similar, how predictable, this city was nothing special, there was no overwhelming honor in any of it.
I guess deep down they all knew it was a façade and they also seemed to know their place in it.
How pathetic I thought - really, these are our local illustrious leaders? No thanks, I had a better team as president of my senior class in High School.
Well, it seems me being the only true entrepreneur in the room - all the ideas were coming from me - and everyone was happy to hear them, perhaps bored with their never-changing bureaucracies.
The suddenly showed spark, as if being woke up.
Remember although some of these folks were duly elected most climbed the ladder their respective bureaucracies.
They were not paid to come up with ideas, only to steady the slow boat cargo ship from China.
The less change the better for them.
No wonder nothing was getting done, no one cared to try.
They'd either lost their will and passion or perhaps never had any from the beginning.
After I was completed explaining a few new ideas, the two girls spoke about what their political leaders were doing.
Being interns they were young and full of energy.
They used all the right words and canned speeches, and they truly sounded great.
Even the one girl whose politician was a Democrat made it sound as if she was the moving force behind new job-growth and economic development.
I'd heard just about all the baloney I could take at that point, especially since her boss voted and supported all of Obama's initiatives.
Anyway, my message in all of this is; "just because you look like you walked of the cover of a fashion magazine and are majoring in political science at Stanford, Columbia, Berkeley, Harvard, or Yale doesn't mean we are going to buy into your politician's latest political rhetoric and BS.
" You see, I've heard the same speeches and comments from political interns and their politicians for the last 40-years, about all the things they are doing for us at our state capital or in Washington DC, how they are fighting for us.
And yet, in 40-years not a damn thing has changed - in fact it's gotten worse out here for the small business community.
So, please think on this.
