      Buy your bulbs at the beginning of the season when there is a wider variety to choose from. Always pick healthy bulbs. To do this make sure they are firm to the touch. The bigger the bulb the bigger the flower and you will get more of them.

      You should plant your spring-flowering bulbs in the early fall, when the soil still has some summer heat in it. You should plant your summer-flowering bulbs in April-May when the soil is starting to warm up.

      Always plant your bulbs in well-drained soil. If your garden soil is clayey and does not drain very well, try adding a good helping of sand, compost and gravel at the bottom of the planting holes.

      Form tight groups of a single variety of bulb in a flower bed, in a dark patch of ground cover, on a piece of ground that is away from the regular path, and in pots and window boxes.

      Now, once the petals have fallen from your flowers, remove the stems with the withered flowers at the first leaf, so that no unwanted seeds will form. Let the foliage yellow on the plant.

      Add fertilizer such as superphosphate, organic matter, special fertilizer for bulbs, or a tomato fertilizer rich in potassium to the potting soil or mixed into the water during the growing season.
