How to Fix a Hem
- 1). Refold the hem, if necessary, using the creases and the rest of the hem as a guide. Iron the folds of the hem to make them crisp.
- 2). Thread the needle with thread that matches the color of the garment in need of repair by sticking 6 inches of one end of the thread through the needle. Tie a double knot in the other end of the thread. The length of the thread needed will depend on how much of the hem needs repaired but one and a half times the length of the area of repair should be enough.
- 3). Make a left-to-right stitch parallel to the top edge of the hem and 1/4-inch below the top edge. Catch only a few threads of the material with this stitch.
- 4). Bring the needle and thread up and to the right at a 45-degree angle just above the top edge of the hem. Make a stitch the same as the first, only make the stitch from right to left this time.
- 5). Bring the needle and thread back down 1/4-inch below the top edge of the hem. Make another stitch like the first you made. Continue making stitches just above and below the hemmed edge to repair the entire unraveling area.
- 6). Knot the end of the thread and trim the remaining length of the thread.
