How to Dye Grosgrain Fabrics

    • 1). Fill a large, plastic bucket with hot water and mix in the dye. Read the manufacturer's directions for the correct water to dye ratio. If you are dyeing ribbon, a small container is sufficient.

    • 2). Run your fabric under hot water. This step is not necessary for ribbon.

    • 3). Place the fabric in the bucket with the dye. Stir the fabric constantly in the dye mix for 10 to 30 minutes, depending upon the amount of fabric. Use a mixing spoon to stir the fabric. For a ribbon, wrap it around your hand. Take it off your hand, holding the loops in place, place it in the small container and press it into the dye until it absorbs the color. If the ribbon is not the desired color, take it out of the container and make more dye mix. Then repeat this step.

    • 4). Remove the fabric and start rinsing it with warm water. Gradually change the temperature to cool water until it runs clear. Ribbons only need to be taken out of the dye mix, unwrapped and pressed with paper towels. Run a hair dryer over the ribbon to speed up the drying time.

    • 5). Hang the fabric and let it dry.
