How To Survive A Catastrophe

It isn't a Matter of IF...
It's a Matter of WHEN!!!
Ever since I was a child, the first Saturday of every month at one o'clock in the afternoon for five minutes the Fire Department Warning Siren would sound off a very Loud Siren as a Test.
The purpose of the test is to alert the community of potential or actual danger so that we may learn How to Survive a Catastrophe.
So one day I began to think.
What if a Disaster happened on that very day? How well would I be able to survive a Major catastrophe, or would I survive at all? Do I have an Emergency Preparedness Checklist? Do I even have a proper First Aid kit? I live in the suburbs outside of a major urban metropolitan area.
I have no real survival skills to think of.
I'm not a hunter, and I'm not a fisherman.
So I have to ask myself, how would I provide for my family during a crisis? Do I know How to survive a disaster? I'm not saying I have any end of the world survival tips, but I should have a plan of some sort.
Do I have enough cash on hand? Do I have a plan in effect now? What if I were instructed to leave my home by authorities, where would I take my family? Could I still buy things at the market? I'm not a survivalist but it does make me take notice of some of the simple things I can do now is in case something happens.
I don't really ever think about this sort of thing happening to me and my family and why should I? After all, it always happens to someone else right? So I'm now sitting here wondering what I would or could really do in a catastrophe situation.
Most certainly the supermarket shelves would be bare.
How could I gain legal access to money if the banks COMPUTERS are down or closed? I've watched these survivalist shows on television and while they are interesting enough, I've always felt that I could become prepared quickly enough.
Like most people, I have flashlights with extra batteries and long- lasting Led lanterns.
Heck, I even have a powerful generator if the power goes out, that is until I run out of gasoline.
Sad to say that I don't even have everything gathered together nicely packed in totes, but I should.
I've seen my fair share of Disaster type TV shows before, but as I sit here typing on my keyboard I've come to realize that I am much more prepared to kill off Zombies than to survive a catastrophe, after all, I've seen enough of those movies to know that you always go for the brain of the undead.
OK, those of us that now know that we should at least give ourselves some sort of advantage by knowing ahead of time what we could do in the event of a catastrophe, man-made or otherwise.
Living here in Michigan, we're not in danger of tsunamis or hurricanes, and earthquakes are very, rare and slight at best.
We have tornadoes now and then but I haven't heard reports in my particular area in 15 years, it always happens someplace else right? But I am very aware that during the chaos and aftermath of a major disaster, there is a chance that someone may want to take what I have and perhaps even kill me and my family for things they want from me.
Some of you may have a cabin up north fully stocked and prepared, and that's good but don't you suppose the freeways would be jammed with other people trying to get out of town also? It would take some time to get there and then hope that someone didn't break in and take your stuff.
You and your family needs to survive in the meantime, in the home you are in now.
Can you honestly say that you know how to survive a catastrophe? So what do I need this stuff now for? I simply call it better safe than sorry, better now than never.
Plain and simple.
In the event of a disaster, do you really think you'll have time to prepare? Now I don't claim to be a leading expert in this field but it is something that we all need to think about.
At the very least we owe it to our families to make sure we've got their back because they would depend on us in the event something should occur.
There is more than enough information on the subject of survival.
I suppose that it would be a smart thing for anyone to invest a few minutes and a few bucks now for more secure future later.
