Staying in one of the spectacular Amalfi villas offers the very best way to enjoy this stunning Italian coastal region.
From any of the Amalfi villas, it's easy to explore simply by hiring a car and navigating the picturesque coastal roads, or taking one of the many buses that link the villages and main sites.
There are myriad opportunities for day trips in the area, here are just a few suggestions.
Capri This enchanting island is a highlight of this coastal region and in times gone by was a favourite with the Roman emperors.
Today, this island continues to attract the rich and famous, and artists and writers come from all over the world to be inspired by its incredible natural beauty.
Upon arriving to the island at Marina Grande, you can take a funicular right to the main town of Capri, which buzzes with activity.
Alternatively, take a boat trip to the magical Blue Grotto, the most famous feature of the island.
The highest town on the island is Anacapri, and there is a chair lift that will take you right to the top.
In this tiny town, pay a visit to Villa San Michele, with its beautiful gardens and spectacular views.
Pompeii If you are staying in one of the Amalfi villas on the coast, make sure you take a trip to visit the incredible excavations of the Roman city of Pompeii.
This city, famously buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius almost two thousand years ago, truly is a sight to behold.
The entire area is huge and requires at least several hours to explore it properly.
It is a good idea to take an audio guide too, and the history and stories of Pompeii will be brought to life as you walk around the ruins.
Pompeii is easy to reach by train and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants close by for much needed replenishment.
A pleasant addition to a visit to Pompeii is a trip to the smaller site close by, known as Herculaneum, which is easy to navigate in an hour or two.
Naples Naples has had a somewhat dubious reputation in the past, but today this vibrant city has much to offer those who take the time to explore it.
The historic centre is simply bursting with stunning architecture, including the Santa Chiara Monastery and the cathedral.
Streets are lined with tiny workshops crafting the classic nativity scenes that the city is famous for.
Castel Nuovo is home to the Civic Museum, which has some wonderful frescos, paintings and other artifacts; the National Archeology Museum is another fine example of this city's recognition of culture.
For an independent traveller visiting Amalfi, villas make a great accommodation option, no matter what the size of your group.
They will allow you the freedom and independence to explore the area at your leisure.
