Cholesterol, Saturated Fats, & Heart Disease - Confusion and Misinformation

103 10
Up until a few years ago 99.
9 out of 100 doctors were 100% convinced about the safety and need for menopausal woman to go on hormone replacement therapy.
No longer true! Likewise, physicians have been saying for decades that eating saturated fats causes heart disease and cardiovascular disease.
Even the American Heart Association has the following statement on its site: "Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood.
High levels of blood cholesterol increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
" EVERYONE AGREES! A NO BRAINER! - RIGHT? NO! - WRONG! A paper recently published by the Harvard School of Public Health examining the effects of consumption of saturated fats and it effects on heart and cardiovascular disease confirms what many of us who spend our lives in clinical nutrition, already knew: "A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease.
But WAIT! The American Heart Association said that - "Saturated fats raise cholesterol" (and that is true) so what does all of this mean? Let's follow logically: Saturated fats raise cholesterol but don't increase the risk of coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease.
(Oh no, where is this going?) Could it possibly be that raising cholesterol in already healthy people, doesn't increase the risk of coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease either? Of course that can't be true because EVERYONE AGREES THAT IT DOES? Now that should convince you! What's that, it doesn't? Well, good for you!
