- 1). Choose an allergy relief mattress cover that has pores no bigger than 10 microns, in order to provide an effective barrier for microscopic dust mites and particles. Make sure to get a cover size that fits the mattress type and thickness you have.
- 2). Choose an allergy relief mattress cover made from cotton or microfiber if you want a soft, breathable cover that won't make any noise. Pick a traditional membrane allergy relief mattress cover, made from 50 percent polyester and 50 percent cotton, if you need waterproof protection for the mattress. You can also find allergy relief mattress covers made from organic fabrics if you desire.
- 3). Wash the allergy relief mattress cover using hot water and a hypoallergenic laundry detergent, then dry the mattress cover. Check for any wet spots before putting it on the bed to make sure it's thoroughly dry and will not trap moisture.
- 4). Remove any sheets, blankets or previous mattress covers from the bed.
- 5). Slide the open zippered end of the allergy relief mattress cover over the end of the mattress. Continue sliding the mattress cover over the mattress until the mattress is completely covered on all sides.
- 6). Zip the zipper on the mattress cover. If you want to provide an extra allergy barrier, you can cover the zipper with painter's tape to help seal any openings.
- 7). Replace the sheets and blankets and regular mattress pad, if desired, over the mattress cover.
