Cobra has produced and released the longest legal driver, the Cobra Long Tom Driver.
The United States Army, during World War II, employed extra large 155mm Cannons that launched 94 pound shells at enemy objectives up to a range of 14 miles.
These cannons were nicknamed "Long Tom", due to their massive range.
By creating a driver at the limits of the maximum allowable club length by the USGA, Cobra has developed the 4 foot long, 48" driver, the Cobra Long Tom Driver.
Modern day day drivers have had a common length of around 45", but that standard has been increasing, and with the introduction of lighter weight materials.
This new driver features an ultra light weight 50 gram Graffaloy Blackbird graphite shaft.
The total weight of the club is an impressively light 269 grams.
The grip is a Winn Ultra Light shorty grip.
The grip is noticeable shorter than any other grip you've seen.
This short length will keep you from chocking down, thus getting full benefits from the extra length of the shaft.
The Long Tom will be the ideal driver for players seeking a little more length when playing in scramble tournaments, where distance trumps accuracy.
Also, with it ultra weight design, older players that are starting to lose distance, will definitely gain extra clubhead speed with the added length.
Cobra strategically selected a short grip and this will encourage players to grip it at the end and take full use of its 48" length.
This is no surprise because with a normal length grip there would certainly be a tendency for a player to try to chock down on the grip and therefore shorten the effective length of the club.
And why would you want to do that? The whole idea behind having a 4 foot long driver is to utilize the entire length of the clubs and create maximum clubhead speed.
It is interesting to note, not only is the loft inscribed on the bottom of the head of the driver, also is the length, and it is written as 4 feet.
The Long Tom Driver will be offered in 3 lofts, 8*,9*, and 10*.
The head is finished in a dark black color, along with a matching shaft and grip.
The head is developed from a Titanium 6-4 body, with a Ti 8-1-1 low density face.
The volume of the head is 445cc.
The face also utilizes Cobras E9 face technology, making it very forgiving, and it has the highest length to weight ratio of any Cobra driver.
The Cobra Long Tom Driver is intended for all player abilities and will help any golfer in search of the ultimate weapon for optimum distance.
Cobra will also be releasing a limited production Cobra Long Tom RAW Driver.
The RAW indicates a raw finish, no paint.
Its a very beautiful, retro appearance.
Cobra has stated production will be limited to 500 units worldwide.
With so few units being produced, there will surely be a huge call for for these limited product RAW drivers and we will likely see prices well above the suggested retail price.
The standard version will retail for $349.
95, and the RAW model will list for $499.
95.
