4th of July Crafts for Young Children

    0-2 Years

    • An infant will enjoy a noisemaker, even if he's too young to make his own. Create a noisemaker using empty juice cans with lids, tissue paper, twist-ties, markers and small noise-making items -- such as buttons, coins or pebbles. Place the small items in the can and tape the lids on. Help a toddler decorate her noise-making can by rolling it in red, white and blue construction paper and using markers.

    2-4 Years

    • Crafts with construction paper are ideal for children 2- to 4-year-olds. Create a 4th of July wreath using red, white and blue construction paper. Either use a template or have your child draw his own large star on a piece of the construction paper. Supervise or help him cut out the outline of the star with the other pieces of construction paper stacked behind it. This will create multiple stars of the exact same size, which may then be glued together, overlapping slightly. Glue the stars together in the form of a circle, and alternate colors. The 4th of July wreath may be used as a party centerpiece or hung on the door to welcome guests.

    4-6 Years

    • Create a useful centerpiece for any 4th of July party or barbecue. Decorate a foam cup with red and blue felt. Cut vertical strips of red felt to be glued on the cup. Leave pieces of foam visible as the alternating white stripes. Have your child cut one long blue felt strip to circle horizontally around the brim of the cup. Decorate the blue stripe with white stars using paint or a white gel pen. Use the patriotic cups to hold treats on the day of the party, or as a practical festive pen holder to leave in the house.

    6 Years and Older

    • Make a flag using Popsicle sticks that young children can take with them anywhere to show their support on 4th of July. Paint five Popsicle sticks red and four white using acrylic paint. Have your child glue them together in an alternating pattern. Popsicle sticks may be glued in place by using one Popsicle stick broken in half on the back as a base. Cut out a small square of blue construction paper to glue to the red and white flag. Glue or paint tiny white stars onto the construction paper. Glue the finished flag onto a final Popsicle stick as the pole.
