Set up an ergonomically correct workstation to learn typing. Utilizing the correct ergonomics will put your body in the most comfortable and most natural position for you to sit and work with ease and no risk of stress or injury. Sit at a desk with a comfortable chair, and adjust the chair height so you can sit up straight and look directly at your computer monitor. Position the computer keyboard so it is at an appropriate typing level. With your elbows resting at your sides and your lower arms extended in front of you naturally, the keyboard should meet your fingers without exaggerated stretching of the arms in any direction. - 2

Place your fingers on the keyboard in what is called the home position. On a QWERTY keyboard, the home position places your right pointer finger on the "J" key while the remaining fingers of the right hand rest on the "K," "L" and ";" keys. Position you left index finger on the "F" key and allow the rest of the fingers of the left hand to rest on the "D," "S" and "A" keys. Begin typing simple words like "dad," "sad" and "jog" to practice touch typing in this basic position. Look down quickly to locate a key when you have to, then return your focus to the computer monitor. - 3

The touch typing programs are designed to teach you the touch typing technique through the use of typing tutorials, interactive games and simple exercises that are both fun and challenging. Practice typing by copying the text of any book or magazine around the house. The book image by Dzmitry Halavach from Fotolia.com
Practice transcribing pages from books or magazines if you do not have access to a touch type program. Set up a document so you can view it easily as you type. Recreate each word, and try to keep your eyes trained on the document you are copying without looking down at the keys.
