Winter Motivation & Interval Training
It was a crazy January! With cold temperatures and not a ton of sun it was really hard to motivate myself to get out there and perform. Having grown up and trained or over 30 years in the upper midwest, I am use to training in hard conditions but its just never gets any easier. Now at 45 even Atlanta seems cold and difficult.
Any temperature under 30 gets me down.  I've tried combining one quality day on the treadmill with 5 days of easy mileage on the dirt…maybe its working, maybe not…I guess I will know soon enough when I start testing my conditioning. I try to run around 10 quality miles a day…11 or 12 when I can and then take Sunday off…its OK for the off season.
Lets face it, its harder than hell to get 12 miles done just straight mileage and in the cold…its that much harder. The old adage is still true, you have to do intervals to keep your body and mind focused. I have tried a lot of different versions but basically for me it takes about 3 miles to warm-up…less on a younger body. Then I spend the next 5 or so miles doing intervals, 1,000's, 800', or miles and then finish with another 3-4 miles easy…if you do it that way, it actually works and its just not that tough.
On a side note: I found out recently that I was featured in Running Times as the top athlete for my age category. It is a nice honor to get…amazing that none of us really knows how we are placed nationally until we read it in print. I'm very happy that they reviewed my times and considered me at all, with all the great gals participating in the sport.
