Butterfly & Herb Garden

104 5

    For Butterflies

    • Butterflies need a combination of plants that provide a place to lay eggs, food for their larva, nectar for adults and a place to form a chrysalis. Monarch butterflies feed on the nectar of many different flowers, but will only breed when they have access to milkweed. Butterflies seek out open, sunny spaces where they can bask and keep their wings warm. They require sources of fresh water, preferably from shallow puddles or wet sand.

    For Herbs

    • Herbs grow well in average garden soil amended with organic matter. The optimal locations receive at least six hours of direct sun each day. Herbs perform better in an area with good air circulation. The soil should drain well. Arrange herbs according to their light, water and nutrient requirements. Herbs are not prone to excessive disease problems or insect infestations. Rely on natural predators rather than chemicals that may harm butterflies.

    For Gardeners

    • Place your butterfly garden where you will see the butterflies visiting. An open area near a patio or garden bench allows gardeners to watch butterflies without scaring them away. The garden should also be conveniently located for you to collect herbs for cooking or craft projects. The location should not inhibit gardeners from replenishing the water supply for the butterflies, pulling weeds or inspecting the plants for signs of harmful insects or other problems.

    Herb and Butterfly Pairings

    • Choose either the type of butterflies you want to visit your garden or the types of herbs you are wiling and able to grow. Monarch butterflies want milkweeds such as butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata L.) or Walter green antelopehorn (Asclepias viridis). The giant swallowtail and black swallowtail are attracted to common rue (Ruta graveolens), which also called herb-of-grace. Plant parsley, dill or fennel also to encourage black swallowtails to feed and breed in your garden.
