How to Transfer a Lift From a Wheelchair to a Van Seat

104 2
    • 1). Open the van door fully.

    • 2). Position the wheelchair at a slight diagonal angle with the front wheels on one side touching the side of the car. This ensures that the wheelchair user will not be transferring over the large rear wheel of the chair. Apply the brakes to the wheels of the wheelchair.

    • 3). Move yourself to the front of the wheelchair so that you are balanced on the edge. If you plan to use a transfer board during the transfer, position this under your backside, on the transfer side of the body.

    • 4). Place your legs into the footwell of the van. It might be necessary to hold on to the door of the car to maintain your balance as you do this.

    • 5). Place the hand that is closest to the car on the car seat. Grip the car door frame with the other hand. Leaning forward, so that your backside is pulled into the air, pull yourself up and onto the car seat, using this arm for power. If you are using a transfer board, you can do this movement in stages, resting on the transfer board in between lifts.
