How to Change Status From F1 to F2
- 1). Complete the Change of Status application, or Form I-539 (see Resources).
- 2). Write a check to the USCIS (see Resources). Write the check according to USCIC standards. You must write your admission number, an 11-digit number on your I-94 form, on the check. The I-94 form is a form that nonimmigrant visitors must fill out when visiting the United States. As of February 2011, the application fee is $290.
- 3). Write a cover letter addressing the USCIS regarding your request to change your status from F1 to F2. Include information such as why you visited the United States as an F1 student, the reason why you want to change your status and other information relevant to your F1 status.
- 4). Collect the following documents: photocopies of previous I-20 and current I-20 forms and photocopies of your spouse's previous and current I-20 forms (an I-20 form is the form you sent to the school you are attending in the United States); photocopies of financial documents such as a bank statement or other documents stating you are supporting yourself while in the United States; photocopy of your marriage certificate; photocopy of your passport with your visa stamp and picture page displayed; photocopy of your I-94 card (front to back with legible date stamp); photocopies of your spouse's passport and I-94 card.
- 5). Send the application, written check and enclosed documents to the USCIS. Response time is approximately two to six months.
