Associations Incorporation Act 1991
- According to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Council of Social Service (COSS), any non-profit entity wishing to incorporate must reserve an association name through the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. The Office of Regulatory Services screens organization names for inappropriateness before granting an association's right to register.
- Associations with at least five founding members over the age of 18 can apply for registration under AIA through the Office of Regulatory Services. Applications must convey information about the association's members, business address, functional purpose and legal compliance issues.
- Associations incorporated under AIA must adopt a set of "objects and purposes." In addition, associations must also draw up a constitution, or rules of association. According to COSS, constitutional regulations and model rules can be found in the text of AIA regulations. Alterations made to an association's constitution must be conducted in accordance with constitutional amendment procedures outlined by AIA.
