Who Needs a Visa?
- All foreign citizens traveling to the U.S. for a visit or vacation need a tourist visa. The only exception to this rule is Canadian citizens, who do not need a visa for a temporary visit.
- People who are not U.S. citizens but intend to marry a U.S. citizen need a K-1 fiancé(e) visa to enter the U.S.
- Noncitizens who intend to work in the U.S. must have either a standard work visa as the result of a permanent residency application, or a temporary work visa from a specific American employer.
- Foreigners seeking an education in the U.S. must have a student visa to enroll in college.
- The spouses and children of foreign workers or students who hold a valid visa also must apply for a visa to enter the U.S. The type of visa assigned to family members depends upon the type of visa the original applicant has.
- Citizens of the U.S. who want to travel abroad may need to obtain a visa for their destination country. This depends on the regulations of the country they want to travel to.
