How to Grade With a Bobcat
- 1). Approach the mound of dirt to be spread out over the grade area, and pick up a bucket of dirt. Carry the dirt to one edge of the area to be graded, and tilt the bucket downward slightly, allowing a small amount of dirt to drop to the ground. Ease the Bobcat in reverse, tilting the bucket downward slightly as you go. Try to spread an even layer of dirt as you move in reverse. Repeat until the mound of dirt has been spread across the grading area as evenly as possible.
- 2). Lift the bucket of the Bobcat as you approach any high spots of dirt in the area to be graded. Point the tip of the bucket downward and lower the bucket to just above the grade height, then ease the Bobcat backward -- back-dragging dirt as you go. Repeat this step, moving forward to any mound, then dropping the bucket to just above the grade height, then dragging dirt backward again.
- 3). Back the Bobcat to one edge of the area to be graded. Point the bucket forward, and lower the bucket arms until the bottom of the bucket is parallel to the surface of the ground, at the desired height of the grade. Ease the Bobcat forward, skimming excess dirt from above the grade level until the bucket is full. Spread the bucket load of skimmed dirt into any low spots in the grade area.
- 4). Drive the Bobcat forward until you reach the edge of the grade area. Drop the bucket so that it is flat and parallel to the grade surface. Move the Bobcat in reverse, and back-drag the entire length of the grade surface. Move to the far edge again, but a few feet to the left or the right, and repeat, while back-dragging across the surface in rows.
- 5). Continue the process of skimming forward and back-dragging until the grade surface is as flat or contoured as you require.
