How to Get a Social Security Number if Married to a US Citizen

    • 1). Obtain an original copy of your U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship. Photocopies are not accepted. If you don't have an original, submit a certified copy by the issuing agency.

    • 2). Provide evidence of age. Supply your birth certificate, passport, U.S. hospital record of your birth (created at the time of birth), religious record established before age 5 showing your age or date of birth, or a final adoption decree.

    • 3). Provide evidence of your identity by supplying a document issued by the U.S. Government. This includes a driver's license, a U.S. state-issued non driver identity card or a U.S. passport.

    • 4). Print and fill out form SS-5.

    • 5). Mail the SS-5 form or take it in person to your local Social Security office.
