Marudamalai is one of the popular temples of Hindu God Murugan. In terms of importance, this temple ranks next only to Arupadaiveedu temples of Lord Murugan. It is situated on top of a hill named Marudamalai in Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu. Bus tickets reservations can be done online to reach this divine place.

Location:

Marudamalai Murugan Temple is located at over 500 feet on the huge Western Ghats in a plateau. It is about fifteen kilometers to the North €" West of Coimbatore.

Travelling to the Location:

Ample transport facilities are available from the capital city of Tamil Nadu, which is €Chennai' to Coimbatore. Booking bus tickets online is now quite easy and simple. Once you reach the city of Coimbatore and the city bus stand, the state transport corporation has Interstate Express buses, which are available for travelling from the Central bus stand. People traveling in large groups can hire a bus to reach the temple comfortably.

From the bottom of the Marudamalai hill, you can reach the temple by climbing up steps through a motarable ghat road or with resting mantaps. For the advantage of the devotees, three buses, which are run by the Temple itself, run from the bottom of the hills to the top.

There are many festivals celebrated worshipping Lord Marudhachalapathy like adi Pathinettu, Padivizha, Karttikai, Brajmotsavam, Karttikai Deepam, Panguni Uttiram etc. Most spectacular festival is Thaipoosam Car Festival. It attracts huge number of devotees.

Mythology:

Vellingiri, Nili, Marudhamalai are the name of three hills, which are very close by. These hills are listed in Perrur puranam as the symbol of Lord Shiva, Parvati and Lord Subramanya respectively. These three hills combined together are considered to be the symbol of Somaskanda.
After witnessing the water pouring out of the roots of Marudham tree, there was joy and happiness and Muruga was worshipped as the God of Jalam and Marudham.

In accordance with Perur Puranam, the curse of gods Surapadma, helped by his brothers, Taraka and Singamukha intended against them caused terror in their minds by his abrupt charges. When the anguish became unbearable, the Gods took the help of Lord Siva.

Later on, Lord Shiva assured the Gods that Muruga would help them by destroying Surapadma and his brothers. The gods should await the arrival of Muruga at the Marudhamalai hills.

History:

The history of the temple could be identified in ancient works as Perur Puranam. The Temple's origin is founded in antiquity. The origins of the temple are found in the Twelfth century. Marudhamalai is celebrated and distinguished by Saint Arunagirinathar in his songs.

Inscription:

Names like Marudham and Marudhachalam have found existence as early as in the 12th Century. Proof of their information could be found on the writings in the temple of Tiru Murugan Poondi and Avinashi.
