103 8
There are certain jobs that are always in need and the role of forklift operator is one of those jobs.
As long as we have cargo being shipped around the world we will need skilled forklift drivers to move that cargo around our shipping docks and warehouses.
As long as we are constructing new buildings, fork lift operators will be needed.
Despite the skills and attention to detail needed for this job, a lot of education is not required.
Most employers will hire you with a GED or high school diploma.
No certificate or license is required.
You will however need a lot of training on the safe operation of these powerful machines.
Who's Responsibility Is Forklift Driver Training? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (known as OSHA) mandates that the employer is responsible for training their own operators.
Each employer must have a training program in place that will teach their new hires safe operation of the forklift.
The training must consist of both formal and practical knowledge and be administered by a qualified and experienced employee.
The trainee will be required to pass this training and a formal evaluation before they are allowed to work independently on a forklift.
While OSHA does state the training must take place, there actually is not a set program dictated for employers to follow.
All that is required is that the employer documents the training.
In addition to that, the trainer isn't actually a "certified instructor", rather he or she will be someone who works at the facility and is experienced enough to facilitate the training program.
What Does Forklift Operator Training Consist Of? The training that you will take part in has a few different portions as mandated by OSHA.
These sections are: Formal Training: this is the classroom portion where you will receive an overview of forklift operations and the necessary safety operations training.
Often you will spend a period reviewing instructional videos.
You will also learn about the various types of forklifts during this portion.
Practical Training: this is the fun part of the training.
During this period you will get hands on with the forklift and learn how to properly operate the machine.
This is performed under the watchful eye of your trainer, so no need to worry about breaking anything! Formal Evaluation: you will then be tested on your skills.
Once this is complete your trainer will document your training and you will be allowed to work as a fork lift operator without any direct supervision.
Despite the current economy, forklift drivers are still in need.
The time to begin your career is now.
