What Is on a Diabetic Diet?
- Because 100 percent of carbohydrates turn to sugar for energy, the diabetic must count carbohydrates. A qualified dietitian determines how many carbohydrates you should have a day.
- Because protein is essential for body maintenance, a diabetic should eat lean meats and plenty of fish. Limit protein to 6 oz. a day.
- Vegetables and fruit contain needed minerals and vitamins, so a diabetic should eat at least three servings per day. A serving is a small fruit or 1/2 cup of vegetables.
- Dairy supplies calcium. A diabetic needs to choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Try to include at least two servings of dairy a day.
- Saturated fat should be limited to no more than 1 gram per serving or a total of 3 grams of fat per serving.
