NLP For Coaches: Anchoring - Cake, Beer and Anchor Steam

103 17
It's about boating, right? My husband asked me if it's like Anchor Steam Ale.
I just said yes.
And actually, it's true.
Tell me something, do you like cake? Unless you have had a traumatic experience regarding cake, chances are you like it.
Now think back to the first time you remember having cake.
A birthday party perhaps? There you are with your cake, candles, presents, and family and friends around you...
They are singing "Happy Birthday" and you can't wait to open the presents.
You know you have to open the cards first, but you're big now, you can do that.
Here is your cake anchor.
(one of them) So now when you see cake, those unconscious memories are working in the background.
The cake is an anchor.
I went to a Christmas party for the National Speaker's Association a while back.
A former Ms.
Nevada appeared and started singing "Santa Baby.
" She sashayed over to the new president-to-be and in her alluring way sang the song to him.
(use your imagination here) I had to admire him, he kept a straight face, but he did blush.
Do you think he will ever hear that song again without images and feelings from that night percolating up through his consciousness? That song is an anchor.
Actually, anchors are ubiquitous (I like that word), in other words they are everywhere, in all of the experiences we have had, and most we will have.
When you listen to, see, hear, taste or feel something new you are creating new anchors.
I am creating an anchor within this article with my use of italics.
How? OK, say I listen to a really cool hypnotic recording of how to get into a state of flow easier, and I am listening to this out on a beautiful hike in the high desert.
The next time I listen to this I will automatically get images of the hike.
I do this intentionally because I feel empowered out in Nature.
This makes the hypnotic recording that much more powerful.
Now, the cool thing is that you can decide to "uninstall" the current anchor(s) on something, and "install" new ones! This is what advertisers do for us.
Have you seen the Dos Equis XX beer commercials, with the "most interesting man in the world?" I don't know about you, but I find them very amusing, and when I now see Dos Equis beer, I laugh and think of the commercials.
A new anchor has been set.
That still doesn't beat the Corona Light commercials on the beach...
This article has actually been about Cake, Beer and anchoring.
I hope I have given you some insight as to how anchors work and how to work with them.
Today be more aware of how advertisers, politicians and you, in your own mind, are using anchors.
