Paraty Bay has over 60 islands. Schooner tours go by a few of them, such as Ilha da Bexiga, or Blister Island, where people with smallpox were quarantined during an early 20th-century epidemic.

The island, which belongs to the family of explorer Amyr Klink, has ruins of one of the seven forts built to protect the town at the height of the Gold Cycle, when Paraty was the port from which the gold extracted in Minas Gerais was shipped to Portugal.
