Ceará Beaches, Brazil

A popular beach destination in Ceará, Beberibe is known worldwide for the exquisite beauty of its sea cliffs and sand dunes. The town located about 55 miles southeast of Fortaleza and 35 miles southeast of Aquiraz also has quieter beaches, such as Uruaú, a favorite among windsurfers, or Ariós and Prainha do Canto Verde, pristine getaways with fisherman's villages.

Buggy rides are a fun way to get around; local tours range in duration from about two to seven hours and cover beaches such as Morro Branco, Uruaú, Caponga and go as far as Canoa Quebrada.

Sea Cliff Natural Monument:

One of the top attractions in Beberibe is the Sea Cliff Natural Monument (Monumento Natural das Falésias de Beberibe), a preservation unit created by decree in June 2004 and comprising a 77-acre spread of moving and stable sand dunes and multi-colored cliffs.

Five communities are inserted in the preservation area: Beberibe, Praia do Morro Branco, Praia da Tabuba do Morro Branco, Praia das Fontes and Praia do Diogo. Locals live mainly on fishing and tourism.

The area's geology is marked by sediments belonging to Formação Barreiras, a formation which follows the coastline and has its most striking outlines at the beaches of Morro Branco ("White Hill") and Fontes ("Springs"); the latter is named after the fresh water springs which pour from the cliff walls, creating delightful natural showers.

The Natural Monument is a full preservation unit; all human interference on its geological formations, such as cliff inscriptions or the removal of vegetation, is strictly forbidden.

The Monument's administration works in a partnership with the local artisan association in the monitoring of permitted use of sand in the making of typical handicraft.

Morro Branco and Fontes draw many tourists in excursion buses on weekends and the high season, but Ceará has sunshine nearly yearlong, making it easy to find these popular destinations with great weather and fewer crowds. Most of the accommodations in town are concentrated at these two beaches, which have barracas de praia, or beach kiosks, serving food and drinks.

Expansive Uruaú, with a beautiful lagoon and great conditions for kitesurfing and kiteboarding, has become all the more appealing since the opening of Hotel Villaggio Tudo Bom.

Gamboa, Parajuru, Barra de Sucatinga, and Praia do Diogo are other scenic beaches worth visiting in Beberibe.

From enormous hotels to small pousadas, Beberibe has a diversity of places to stay in several price ranges, many of which are in the area's most famous beaches: Fontes, a great choice for family vacations, with its calm waters, natural springs and a grotto, and Morro Branco.
