Benefits And Drawbacks Of Using High Blood Pressure Medications

Today, there is no argument that having high blood pressure is bad for everyone.
At the same time, however, it is one of the more prevalent diseases around.
Fortunately, in many cases, if the patient is willing, the disease can be effectively treated with dietary and exercise changes.
In some cases, however, the disease is so severe that it can only be treated by fighting it with high blood pressure medications.
These medications help to control hypertension by a variety of means.
For example, diuretic based medicines will eliminate water and salt from the body.
This decreases pressure on the blood vessels.
Beta blockers slow down the heart rate.
This, in turn, reduces the amount of blood that is pumped through the arteries and also lessens the hypertension.
Ace inhibitors help to improve your cardiovascular health by blocking enzymes that aggravate hypertension.
While calcium channel blockers use an innovative concept of interrupting the passage of calcium that normally flows into the heart.
This action prevents the arteries from constricting which means that blood flowing through them has less resistance.
These medications are just the tip of the iceberg.
Each year brings new exciting health discoveries that can be used to combat hypertension.
These medications, however, are not problem free.
One problem is that if you happen to be unfortunate enough to require medications, it's important to realize that none of them actually cures high blood pressure.
At this point in time, the best that they can do is to manage the disease.
If you really want to tackle the root of the problem, you will have to undergo drastic lifestyle changes.
A second potential problem with using these types of medications is that many of them cause unpleasant or harmful side effects.
Depending on the specific type of medicine used, the patient can experience headaches, dizziness, increased urine, dry mouth, heart palpitations, and so on.
This is why it is so important that a patient closely monitors his reactions when he begins to take any type of new medications.
If any side effects occur, he should notify his doctor as soon as possible.
Often, a substitute medication without those side effects can be prescribed.
In the most extreme instances of high blood pressure, the patient may have to take more than one type of medication.
Most of these medicines are specialized in that they only target one aspect of hypertension.
The patient's doctor may determine that using two, three, or more medicines in combination with each other can help get the blood pressure under control more rapidly.
This is especially true if the doctor thinks that the person is imminent danger of having a heart attack or stroke.
