Brazilian National Team Flying High on Plane with Art by Os Gêmeos
Street art by Os Gêmeos ("The Twins", Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo) had long ago expanded beyond the borders of Cambuci, the São Paulo neighborhood where they grew up. But having created their art on castles, tunnels, and trains, and having had it featured in galleries and museums in Brazil, Cuba, Chile, the US, Italy, Spain, England, Germany, and Japan, the duo have painted an airplane - the Brazilian national soccer team's craft - for GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, the squad's official carrier in 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
The brothers spent about 100 hours and over 1,000 cans of paint imported from Spain on the work which will be featured on the aircraft for the next two years.
“Besides being a challenge because we painted on a medium which is different from the usual, this work provides unrestricted access to our art, which portrays Brazilian people in their diverse and colorful ethnicity," said Os Gêmeos in a press release. "For two years, this work will be in the skies and airports of Brazil and be viewed by countless people, who can enjoy it and take part in it in a way that surprises their everyday life."
“This is a work of art which we'll take to all of Brazil as a celebration of Brazilian soccer fans and of our national team," said GOL Marketing Director Florence Scappini. "We are very proud to be the national team's official carrier and to carry with them and the fans the dream of the sixth world title."
The aircraft is a Boeing 737-800 Sky Interior, which has more room for carry-on luggage and the larger space between seats characteristic of the GOL+ configuration.
The craft's first flight with osgemeos art was Confins-Congonhas on May 27.
