How to Remove & Replace a Whirlpool Agitator

    • 1). Unplug the washing machine from the wall or turn off the power to the circuit where the washer is installed. This will help prevent accidental shock. Open up the washer lid.

    • 2). Look at the top of the agitator. You should be able to see a thin line where the agitator cap meets the top of the agitator. Insert the edge of a flat-bladed screwdriver beneath the cap until it pops off.

    • 3). Unscrew the agitator bolt with a socket wrench. Depending on your Whirlpool model, you might need to use an extension on the socket for it to reach. Remove the bolt once it is unscrewed.

    • 4). Remove the agitator dogears--the smaller part of the agitator located at the top that has the flaps on the side--if present.

    • 5). Lean over the washing machine and place your hands underneath the agitator. Keep your head turned to the side, away from the agitator. This will help prevent you getting an eye full of agitator if it comes off too quickly. Pull upwards firmly on the agitator to remove.

    • 6). Place a few drops of liquid detergent of the agitator shaft. This will help make it easier to slide the new agitator in place. Slip the new agitator over the shaft. Replace the dogears, if present. Drop the bolt into the top of the agitator and secure.

    • 7). Press the agitator cap back into place. Restore the power to the washer.
