    The Underwear Trick

    • One of the more common humorous tricks used to help people overcome their fear of public speaking is to imagine the audience in their underwear. While this is extremely effective at reducing your stress about the event, it can also prove a distraction if not done properly. Prior to stepping out into the room, take a look at the people in the front row of the audience. Imagine the people in that row in their underwear, wearing silly hats or dressed in some way that you would find amusing. If that gives you a laugh then it worked and you can address the crowd with confidence. Just be sure to get the laughing out of the way before you begin speaking.

    Laughter Off the Bat

    • In almost any setting it is appropriate, and maybe even expected, that the speaker at an event will start off with a joke. One of the more effective kinds of initial humor is a quick jab that gets people to laugh instantly. This instant laughter can sometimes add as an agent to help soothe your nerves. Try walking out and asking right off the bat if there are any questions. Start off by saying that it is nice to be at the event, but in an uninspired and indifferent tone. Another very effective way to get people laughing instantly is to walk up to the podium, and as the applause dies down thank the audience and begin to walk off stage. Get them laughing right off the bat and you will put yourself at ease, and the audience may be more inclined to listen to what you have to say.

    Use a Mirror

    • A mirror can be an effective tool at easing your mind before speaking in public. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and start to make funny faces at yourself and dancing. If you do not have access to a full-length mirror then find any mirror and make faces. If you accompany the faces with noises you can start to get yourself laughing almost instantly. It is a good way to get yourself ready to face a crowd, and it also helps to get you into a good mood which can be helpful when speaking to an audience.
