How to Recognize Betta Diseases

103 7
There are several different betta diseases that your fish may develop but there are only six that are commonly seen which are Fin Rot, Dropsy, Bacterial Infections, Swim Bladder Disorder, Velvet, and Ich.
The most common ailment or betta disease is fin rot.
Fin rot can occur via stress or injury.
Do not think that all fish get along, there are bullies even in the fish world and betta fish can receive injuries to their tail or fins.
The reason this is true is that this area is prone to bacteria that is always found in the water.
The first noticeable sign of fin rot are brown spots on the fins or tails, which is the beginning of deterioration.
In the worst-case scenario, you will find pieces of fin or tail floating in the water.
The best medications to use for fin rot are Melafix, Maracyn, or salt bath.
Dropsy causes the body to swell and make the scales stick out to form an appearance of a pinecone.
This betta disease can be caused by internal parasites, tumors, bacterial infection, tuberculosis, to name a few.
Once you see the scales protruding it is normally too late, however, the best way to treat is with salt baths or other medicines aimed at healing internal bacterial infections.
Bacterial infections are often seen with signs of loss of appetite, sluggishness, and in some cases, red lines on the body or fins or ulcers.
The best way to treat this betta disease is with antibiotics.
Swim bladder disorder causes fish to have problems swimming in a straight line or they will be lying on their side.
The major cause of this betta disease is overeating.
The best way to treat a betta with this disease is to not feed for three days.
If the symptoms are still present after three days of fasting, your fish more than likely has a bacterial infection or an injury of their swim bladder.
Be sure to provide your betta with a variety in their diet, which can help stop this disease in most cases, unless you are overfeeding.
Velvet and Ich are both infections caused by parasites.
They do look different but the treatment is very close.
Velvet begins as tiny white specks but is hard to see without the use of a flashlight.
Ich appears like white specks or spots.
Your betta will try to rub against items in the tank to remove the parasites.
The sad news is that both of these betta diseases are contagious, so you will need to quarantine the fish that is sick.
A salt bath will help the parasite fall off and you can treat the water with Coppersafe, Rid-Ich, or Aquarisol.
