Incontinence research
Incontinence research conducted by our academics here at the University of Southampton has investigated the effectiveness of various continence products to help users identify the best options for them.
This incontinence research team joined forces with the International Continence Society and the International Consultation on Incontinence, to develop a website that tests and evaluates the effectiveness of different continence products.
Products and devices for the large number of people living with urinary incontinence can make a huge difference to quality of life for them and their families. However, some of these products and devices can be less than effective and uncomfortable to wear.
Clinical trials and evidence based studies by our incontinence research team have led to the redesign and development of new continence products, and have also helped users and healthcare professionals around the world to make evidence based choices.
In terms of research outcome, this incontinence research work has brought tangible benefits for users whose quality of life is affected by incontinence.
The incontinence research is led by Professor of Continence Technology and Associate Dean for Research, Mandy Fader, who said: "Continence products are not subjected to the controls and regulations required for medicines and there is little access available to independent evidence-based advice.
"Due to the cost and difficulty in assessing products much of the health service offered a ‘set menu' or restricted list of products - a kind of one size fits all." She added.
At Health Sciences we are proud to give you a truly world class learning environment; helping you to move forward with your chosen career.
At the University of Southampton's Faculty of Health Sciences we have world class academics who conduct ground breaking clinical research to find answers for the big questions that still remain.
Our Faculty has a proud history of research, earning us a reputation for excellence, which we are committed to upholding. For example, at the last Research Assessment Exercise our research activities were ranked second in the country (RAE score 2008: 3.25).
That success was partly down to the enormous range of disciplines academics from each research group hold. As a result, each group is able to cover more angles and ultimately analyse subjects more thoroughly. But that's just part of the picture.
