The Cal Pines Lodge is open to all travellers.

Plan your trip for between the months of June and October. The region is the most accessible then. Depending upon where you live, you can drive or fly into Redding, which is 122 miles away, or Reno, Nevada, which is 189 miles away. From either point, you can rent a car and drive to the Cal Pines Lodge. There are nearby RV parks and campgrounds as well.

      "Go fish" at Rainbow Pond.

Buy a fishing or hunting license. There is an estimated 44,000 acres of fishing in Modoc County, and the Cal Pines Lodge stocks many of the neighboring ponds and lakes with rainbow trout for its visitors every year. There are also deer, antelope, geese and elk in rich abundance. Each can be hunted in season with the appropriate license, purchased locally. The appropriate fishing licenses are available in Alturas, at any hunting and fishing store. Abide by all state rules as you hunt or fish.

Enjoy first-class food in the heart of the wilderness.

Choose your accommodations. Make reservations at the lodge, where you will enjoy maid service, TV, a microwave and free Wi-Fi. Or you can park your RV at a neighboring RV park. There are also a handful of campgrounds in the region. No matter where you stay, you and your family can eat at the lodge or come to the swap meet held each Saturday from 8:00am to 2:00pm.

Explore the surrounding areas. The nature around Cal Pines is rich with lava bed formations, and the terrain offers many rocks and gems that can be harvested. The Warner Mountains, 30 miles east of the lodge, are one of the best resources in The United States for obsidian. Contact the United States Forest Service office to receive authorization before collecting obsidian.
