How to Know When a Newborn Has Colic

    • 1). Monitor your baby's crying habits throughout the month. Unlike typical baby crying, colic causes a baby to scream and cry for at least three straight hours, four days out of a week. Heavier crying usually occurs in the afternoon and evening hours.

    • 2). Observe your baby's physical condition and mannerisms. A crying colic baby turns very red in the face and frantically extends the arms and legs. Colic also causes cold feet, abdominal bloating and excessive gas.

    • 3). Pick up your baby during a crying episode and observe their response afterwards. Colic can cause continual discomfort and irritability, so your baby may continue to cry even while you are attempting to provide comfort.
