Monster cakes are ideal party food for Halloween, costume parties or any monster-themed occasion. Decide based on the age group and general taste of the invited guests how graphic and terrifying you want the monster cake to be, or if you would rather go the route of the playful, cartoon monster. Monster cakes can be easily baked and assembled at home with food coloring and mounds of frosting.

    Green Monster

    • Bake several round cakes and stack them once cooled, then ice the stack in the desired monster color. Green would be an ideal choice. Cover chunks of candy, marshmallows and cereal treats in frosting and attach them to tooth picks to create the features of a nose, eyes, mouth and ears. Attach them to the front edge of the cake and pile chocolate frosting on the top as hair. Use a cake writing gel to add the small details.

    Spider Monster

    • Bake a cake and ice it in white frosting. Use a black cake writing gel to draw a crisscross pattern of a spider's web across the top of the cake. Use clumps of chocolate frosting to create the body of the spider. Use small, green candy as the spider eyes. Twist black licorice underneath and around the spider body to create the legs. If desired, add a smaller mound of chocolate frosting, some chocolate candies or gummy worms to create the illusion of smaller flies and bugs caught in the web.

    Hairy Monster

    • Bake a cake and cover it in small squirts of green frosting through a star tipped piping tool. The small tufts of frosting sticking out in every direction will give the impression of green monster hair. Cover the entire cake with this green piping. Use white or green icing to attach multiple sets of eyes all over the cake. For the eyes, use round candies, such as M$M's, gummy rings, lifesavers and Mentos. If desired, add additional details to the eyes with a black cake writing gel.
