An adult who has decided to go back to school may enjoy an education-related gift for a special event, birthday or holiday. Try to remember your friend or family member's personal academic interests and pursuits when selecting a gift. Also, an educational item that helps the gift recipient launch or expand a new interest makes a worthy and appreciated gift.

    Language Audio Kit

    • If the recipient does not speak English as his first language, then consider getting him a language audio kit. In many parts of the country, you can purchase a kit at your local book store or from online vendors. If the gift recipient is in language classes already, then get him some entertaining and "fun" audio resources such as music or books on tape to help him become more familiar with English. This idea works for English speakers who are trying to learn a foreign language, as well.

    Collection of Books

    • If your friend has a favorite author, then consider buying a book set or at least three books of the same author. You can get new and nearly new books at discount prices from online vendors. Include a greeting card with the collection that reminds the gift recipient to take time in her study schedule to enjoy the delights of reading for pleasure.

    A Gift of Class

    • If you budget allows, then consider gifting the recipient with an online class or a class at a local university or community college that allows him to pursue an interest. For example, creative writing classes work well in online settings and may help the gift recipient finally write that short story or novel he has been dreaming about writing for years. There are a wide variety of courses. Pick one that you know your friend would like--or give him a handmade gift certificate that is redeemable for any class he wants to take.

    Learning Tools

    • Fill a gift basket with learning tools that the gift recipient can use while pursuing a specific subject. For example, a person pursuing a degree in mathematics might appreciate a basket filled with sharpened pencils, a pad of paper, a scientific calculator and a set of math flashcards tailored to the specific branch of mathematics that she is studying.

    Inspirational Gifts

    • It is easy to get into a rut when pursuing a rigorous academic schedule. Help the gift recipient become energized when he is feeling stressed out with a gift that helps him relax and motivates him to persevere. An example of an inspirational gift is a decorative box filled with microwaveable popcorn, boxed candy, a six-pack of soda, a bottle of aromatherapy lotion, a joke book, and a door hanger that you can make with the following message: "Please do not disturb! Mommy is studying!" or "Please do not disturb! I'm trying to earn a degree before 75!" Also, include a personal greeting card that reminds the person that being an adult student is important and enriches the lives of other students.
