It's essential drivers be aware of laws regarding license plates. The state of Ohio has clear expectations as to the manner in which license plates are displayed in your vehicle. There is also ample evidence that Ohio police officers consistently enforce the law in this regard, especially the requirement for front-located plates. Compliance with these laws will help ensure a smooth and uninterrupted ride to the office or grocery store. - Ohio requires that license plates be displayed both in the front and rear of most passenger vehicles. If you are caught without one or both of these plates then the state will charge you with a minor misdemeanor. There are some vehicles however where you do not need to--and in fact shouldn't--display plates in the front. Some examples of rear-only vehicles are motorcycles, mobile homes, and trailers.
- All temporary plates and stickers in Ohio must be placed on the rear of your vehicle. You're allowed to put a temporary plate inside the car up against the back window, or to place it on the exterior. If you have it inside the vehicle you've got to make sure that the plate is visible and that nothing is blocking the officer's view. Any violation of this law is also considered a minor misdemeanor. Your Ohio license plate expires every year on your birthday.
- The state of Ohio allows special plates to be issued to someone with a disability, or to a vehicle which carries or has been customized to carry the disabled. In order to obtain the plate, you must give a statement from your health care provider confirming your eligibility for the plate. In most cases, the disabled person has to be on the title of the vehicle or the lease, unless that vehicle has been altered to accommodate his condition. Ohio does not demand any additional fees for disability plates as long as they are stock plates.
