If you wish to operate a moped in the state of Vermont, you will have to follow similar procedures as you would if you owned any other type of motor vehicle. With a few exceptions, Vermont regulates moped use in a similar manner as a motorcycle. Anyone with questions regarding Vermont moped law should contact the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. - Vermont law requires moped operators to have a standard driver's license. Moped riders do not need to obtain a special license endorsement to operate the vehicle. This means that unlike those wanting to ride a motorcycle, moped riders do not need to take any special classes or tests. Owners must register their moped like they would any other vehicle.
- Residents must purchase the standard liability insurance required of any vehicle owner in the state. Vermont minimums include $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 to cover incidents involving two or more people, and $10,000 for property damage.
- Unlike motorcycle riders, Vermont law does not require moped riders to wear a helmet.
