Controlling Your Temper with Anger Management Courses
Anger management classes are educational courses designed to change the way you think and behave. During this therapy, your therapist will teach you strategies that can improve your thought processes and reduce destructive behaviors. Typically occur once or twice a week for approximately an hour and a half. Missing classes is strongly discouraged because you will miss a lot when you are not there. Each week you will learn new skills, strategies and techniques that can help you effectively manage your anger. You will be expected to work out of anger management course books. These course books will teach how to apply what you learn in class to life outside of class. Anger management courses can last as long as 8 weeks or as long as 60 weeks, depending on the severity of your anger problem. Although these classes can last between 8 and 60 weeks, you will probably participate in 10 to 12 weekly sessions. Anger management courses tend to be enjoyable, engaging, positive and optimistic. The main goals of the classes are to: provide you with the tools that you need to control your anger reframe your unhealthy thoughts change your negative behaviors restore damaged relationships and improve your self-esteem. Before you begin anger management courses, you will be required to complete an in-person, telephone and/or computer-based pre-assessment test. You will also be required to complete a post-assessment test once you have completed all of the classes in your anger management therapy program. These courses typically range in price from $40.00 per class to $200.00 for the entire program.
How Will I Know If I Have Anger Issues?
The following questions will help you determine if these courses is the right step for you: When you become angry do you feel dizzy, nauseous, breathless and/or generally unwell? When you become angry do you experience anxiety, depression, excessive worry, embarrassment and/or irritation? How long does your anger normally last? Is it hard to shake feelings of anger, rage, fury or irritation once they occur? Has your anger ever ruined a relationship (spouse, significant other, family or friend)? How often does your anger arise? Can you control your emotions once you become angry? If you are answered "yes" to three or more of these questions, you may have an anger problem that requires courses.
Do I Need To Take Any Courses For This?
You may need to take classes if you feel that your issues are interfering with your relationships, productivity at work and/or self-esteem or if it is negatively impacting your quality of life. You may be required to attend anger management classes as part of a court order or an employer request. If the classes are part of a condition (such as going back to work or regaining custody of your children) you will not be released until you have fulfilled your course requirements.
During classes, you will also learn how to:
effectively communicate with others actively listen to others make sound decisions control your impulses forgive set realistic goals reframe your thought processes refrain from participating in self-destructive behaviors improve your self-esteem and self-awareness. The main purpose of the anger management classes is to motivate you to change your negative behaviors.
Will Anger Management Classes Help Me With These Issues?
Research suggests that anger management courses are beneficial for people who have anger management or emotion-control issues. This type of treatment is especially valuable for those in jail or prison, but most of the current studies are tailored towards the general population. In a recent study that tested hundreds of people with anger issues, approximately 96% of them reported that they felt less angry, was able to better control their emotions (rage, anger, anxiety and irritation), communicated more effectively and generally felt more positive following anger management classes (Aviezer et al., 2008). The participants also reported that they experienced significant improvement in their relationships and behavior.
