Thin Skin Problems
- Dr. Lawrence Gibson of the Mayo Clinic explains that when we become older, our blood vessels are no longer cushioned by that fat layer of skin, which means the vessels are easily damaged. The slightest ding can result in a tear to the skin or extreme bruising. Sun exposure over the years results in broken down elastin fibers in the dermis, which is the deep layer of the skin, as well as loss of collagen. When collagen and elastin diminish, the skin becomes fragile and loses its elasticity and ability to bounce back after an injury or wound.
- If an individual is taking certain medicines, such as blood thinners, steroids or oral or topical corticosteroids, this can further weaken the blood vessels and the skin.
- If medical conditions such as Ehler-Danlos syndrome, amyloidosis or a bleeding disorder are present, this can impact the skin.
- Doctorgoodskin.com explains that bruising and bleeding occur when we are older because the dermis, which is the layer of skin located beneath the epidermis, which is the top layer of skin, loses strength. The layer of skin below the dermis is called the subcutaneous layer and this layer becomes thin as we age. This was the layer that earlier on in our life provided the protective fat padding. Our sebaceous glands and sweat glands become less active as we age and this makes skin dry, which puts it at a higher risk for tearing.
- One way to safeguard your skin is to keep it moisturized at all times. When skin is hydrated, it is supple and less apt to tear. In the winter months, your skin will get even drier so increase your moisturizing routine. Not only will your skin look and feel better but you protect it from injury by keeping in lubricated.
- Don't use harsh shaving lotion of any kind or creams or gels that are harmful to your skin. There are additives in most products, which can irritate any skin but particularly thin, aging skin. Avoid alcohol containing products because alcohol will further dry out your skin.
