Parenting - Discipleship As Designed by God and Practiced by Jesus
The idea behind Jesus' approach takes us back to a much earlier time.
God said, "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
This commandment to teach diligently God's word to children was given to parents and grandparents by God through Moses just after God had provided the Ten Commandments.
A promise accompanied God's command that if it was faithfully followed their days would be prolonged, life would go well, they would prosper and multiply, and they would receive a blessed land.
You can meet someone weekly for prayer and accountability but that is not making disciples like Jesus did; that is a "microwave approach.
" You can attend church but that is not making disciples.
You can teach a class at church but that is not making disciples like Jesus did.
You can preach the gospel but that is only a part of making disciples.
You can win souls but that is only a small part of making disciples.
Jesus commanded all of us to make disciples and this practice was the very heart of His ministry.
If you do not disciple your children, then who will? If you will not disciple your children, then they will become "spiritual orphans" and will likely become a part of the mass exodus of our young people from the church.
When it comes to discipling your children, the primary focus, as noted earlier, is the glory of God in their lives.
Of course, your motivation toward your children is to do them good as well.
Although no parent has the ability to measure up to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, every parent has the ability to make better choices to disciple like Jesus did.
