How to Put a New Rope on a Flagpole

    • 1). Cut the old rope and hold on to both ends tightly to make sure it doesn't pull itself out of the pulley.

    • 2). Splice the end of the old rope to the end of the new rope. Lay the two pieces end to end, taping the front and back with electrical tape, then wrapping tape up the joint, starting 4 to 5 inches below the joint and ending 4 to 5 inches past the joint. You can wrap again in the other direction if you'd like, but do not make the splice too large or it won't fit through the pulley at the top of the pole.

    • 3). Pull the new rope up through the pulley and down again, using caution. If you experience difficulty as the splice tries to fit through the pulley, continue to patiently pull the rope through. Tugging hard on the rope may undo the splice and leave you with no rope on either end.

    • 4). Cut the splice, after you have the spliced part of the ropes back in your hand.

    • 5). Tie the two ends of the new rope together using the knot of your choosing to make your rope one continuous loop.

    • 6). Hoist the knot to the top of the pole, near the top pulley, on the flag side of the loop.

    • 7). Attach the first snap hook at the bottom of the rope loop, then pull it up slightly and attach the second snap hook.

    • 8). Hoist the flag to the top of the pole, stopping a couple of inches from the pulley at the top to prevent wear and tear on your flagpole. Secure the flag in place by wrapping the rope around the pole's cleat.
