Tools for Travelers

    Passport/Document Holder Neck Wallet

    • A document holder that you can wear around your neck is a handy way to keep all of your necessary travel information, such as airline tickets and passports, together and easily accessible. This is especially important when you are navigating an airport and are asked to present these documents multiple times. While some people try to carry these items separately in their hands, it is easy to misplace them while taking off your shoes and jacket at security points or performing other similar tasks. A document holder that you can wear around your neck and hidden under your shirt is also an excellent way to keep your money out of sight and close to your body in countries where pickpockets may abound. Some people even sleep with their money in a document holder around their neck in countries where theft is an especially common problem.

    GPS or GPS App

    • A GPS is an invaluable travel tool if you are planning on driving or even flying and then renting a car. Even if you believe you know exactly where you are going on a road trip, an unexpected side trip or detour caused by road construction or a bad accident can suddenly steer you off into unknown territory. A traveler with a GPS unit will be able to find a new route by simply plugging in the address of his destination and following its directions.

If you own a smart phone, you can choose to download a GPS app instead of purchasing a separate unit. Walkers can even download apps designed especially for them. Fortunately, most of these apps work as well as a separate GPS unit.

    TSA-Friendly Bags

    • Manufacturers today have created many different types of TSA-friendly bags that are designed to help you pass through checkpoints with less stress. For laptops, the TSA asked manufacturers to design bags with a laptop-only section. This section could not have any pockets or metal fasteners on the inside or outside of it. If a laptop is stored in such a TSA-compliant bag, the computer might not have to be removed before going through an X-ray unit. However, you can't be sure a screener won't ask you to take a laptop out of even a TSA-approved bag.

In addition, manufacturers have also come up with clear cosmetic carry-on bags that contain clear three-ounce bottles that meet the TSA guidelines. These bags take the guess work out of the amount of liquid a person can carry on board a plane.

    Tablet or Netbook

    • Netbooks are small, lightweight computers that usually have 10-inch screens. Tablets, such as the iPad, are also small, compact computers, but these devices use a touch screen instead of a keyboard for inputting. These units are flat like tablets -- thus their name.

With a netbook or a tablet, a traveler can access the Internet to do research, get maps, confirm hotel and airline reservations, and check emails without having to lug around a full-size laptop.

    e-Reader

    • While many people enjoy reading books on long plane or car rides, some travelers don't enjoy hauling around a bunch of heavy books, magazines and guide books in their backpacks or suitcases. For those people, an e-Reader is the answer. Not only can an e-Reader hold hundreds of books in one lightweight unit, new books can be purchased in mere minutes, even if you are nowhere near a bookstore. Some e-Readers also allow you to check out books from a library.
