Ferrets can be bought at any age and are available in a wide variety of colors and markings.
Therefore, when you go to buy a ferret one thing is for certain that you will potentially have quite a bit to consider.
From kits to adult ferrets, you will have numerous options and depending on whether you have it in you to train and cater to the specific needs of a kit or an adult, you will reach your decision about what ferret to get.
The question though - and the main focus of this article - is where should you go and buy a ferret from.
Foremost among all of these options will be that of going to a professional ferret breeder.
Since the breeder will have catered to the needs of his/her ferrets from birth, he/she will know the exact characteristics of their ferrets, such as their age and color, parenting etc.
However, when choosing a particular breeder it is important that you be on your guard since there are both good and bad breeders out there.
Try and look for a breeder who breed out of love and compassion rather than solely for a few extra bucks on the side.
Pay real close attention when you visit the breeder's premises, to the conditions the ferrets are kept.
It is imperative that you assess the breeder accurately, for the ferrets are usually a reflection of their respective breeder.
A good breeder will generally offer you advice on which kit to choose as well as what things you need to consider before and after you buy a ferret.
Moreover, a good breeder will also tend to be more than willing to show you how he/she keeps their own ferrets on a day to day basis.
If you are having trouble finding a good breeder look at ferret magazines for help.
Alternatively drop in at your local vet who will also be able to recommend you a good breeder.
That said you might find it possible to go and a buy a ferret from your local pet store.
Again you will get to know about the ferret's age and color, however be prepared to pay a higher price here, compared to buying from a breeder.
Breeders and pet stores aside, you also have the option of buying a ferret from answering advertisements in the newspaper or on the internet (such as on Craigslist).
Note though that if you are a novice ferret owner, you should avoid this route since ascertaining the health and personality of a ferret will be a rather tricky matter.
Nonetheless as a rule of thumb remember that when you buy a ferret by answering any advertisement, the eyes of the ferret need to be clear, bright and equal in size to one another.
Secondly the skin needs to be in good shape.
Above all else though, the ferret needs to be alert and playful.
Regardless of where you buy the ferret from, you should be prepared to pay anywhere between $50 and $120.
Note also that your cost will increase further when you go and buy supplies for your ferret.
The list of these supplies will include things like a wire mesh cage, bedding (either a ferret hammock or a sleeping sack), food, etc, etc.
Given all these expenses, it is important that before you buy a ferret, you ask yourself whether you have it in you to look after a one day after day.
When you do buy a ferret remember that it is a long commitment that you are making, hence do not buy a ferret just because everybody else is buying one.
Buy a ferret if you truly want one and you know that you will be able to love the furry little creature through and through.
