Bass Fishing in Ontario, Canada
- Ontario's southern lakes include Erie, Ontario, Huron, and Georgian Bay; its northern lakes are Superior, Nippissing and Muskoka. According to ProBassFishing, small inland lakes in Ontario's Bruce Peninsula also provide great opportunities for bass fishing. Also, the Kawartha Lakes -- Pigeon, Scugog, Rice, Buckhorn, Sturgeon and Balsam -- have a big supply of largemouth and smallmouth bass.
- Wilderness Air states that northern Ontario is known for its smallmouth bass fishing. It gets its name because the rear end of its lower jaw doesn't extend past the eye. The smallmouth bass usually matures around age three or four and can live up to 10 to 12 years. The average length of a smallmouth ranges between 10 and 20 inches. Mid-June through to fall are believed to be the best times to catch smallmouth.
- Ontario Bass Fishing explains that the largemouth bass is adaptable to a large variety of habitats, even those more suitable for smallmouth. Typically, you'll find a largemouth in shallow, mud-bottomed lakes and slow-moving streams with a lot of aquatic vegetation. In contrast to smallmouth bass, its upper jaw extends behind the eye when the mouth is closed.
- There are several options in terms of planning a bass fishing trip. According to Ontario Fisherman, this includes drive-to camps, semi-remote camps, fly-in lodges, fly-in outposts, fly-in day trips, or tent camps. For example, on a fly-in day trip, a fisher are on their own once the plane leaves. This kind of trip is usually for people with some experience operating small boats on small, unfamiliar lakes.
- MNR advises that a one-year fishing license for an Ontario resident is in effect from January 1 until December 31. Three-year fees may change after August 31, 2010. You can obtain a license at an MNR office in your location. An Ontario-resident Outdoors Card is a plastic, wallet-sized, identification card that must accompany your Ontario fishing license. The Outdoors Card is valid for three years.
