Children's Pirate Cake Ideas
- An edible chest of buried treasure is simple to make using a loaf of pound cake. Cut off the top third of the cake, and hollow out the bottom portion. Spread chocolate icing over the cake. Using licorice or piped icing, decorate the top and front of the chest with straps and locks. The cake that was removed from the bottom can be crumbled and scattered around the treasure chest to look like sand; crumbled vanilla wafers can also be used. Fill the bottom with "treasure," using gold coins and candy jewelry.
- Decorate an island of cupcakes with a treasure map. Cover a dozen cupcakes with white frosting dipped in vanilla wafer crumbs to look like sand. Arrange the cupcakes on your serving dish, and garnish with more wafer crumbs. Create a dotted line map on the cupcake tops using bits of licorice laces. One cupcake can be hollowed out, filled with candy, covered with icing and marked with an "X" to mark that it contains buried treasure. Make a candy parrot, pirate flag and treasure chest to help decorate the map.
- Cut two 9- or 10-inch round cakes in half, creating four pieces. Layer all four pieces using a coat of chocolate icing between each layer, and slightly trim the curved edge of all layers. Once the flat side is turned up, they should sit flat (see image in References). Coat with chocolate icing and use a butter knife to create ridges. Use thin wafer cookies to create gunwales around the deck's edge, and stick chocolate wafer rolls in the sides of the cake as cannons. Use wooden skewers as masts, which will hold paper sails.
- Use a 9-inch by 13-inch sheet cake to create this sword. Cut into three pieces lengthwise. Use one as the blade. Cut another in half width-wise. Put half aside for the hilt, and divide the other half width-wise one last time. Assemble the sword such that the long pieces for the blade and the hilt create one long strip. Where they meet, the two small pieces--the cross guard--should extend outward. Trim the end of the blade to a point. Frost the blade with gray icing and the handle with yellow. Decorate the hilt with colorful gummy candies to look like jewels.
