How to Fix the Registry on Windows 2000
- 1). Visit Microsoft's Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install page (see Resources section). These startup disks will install the necessary CD-ROM drivers that allow you to use the Windows installation CD to install or repair a Windows operating system.
- 2). Click the "Download" button to begin downloading the boot disk utility. If it does not begin automatically within 30 seconds, select the "Start Download" link to force the download. Downloading this file could take several minutes depending upon your Internet connection speed.
- 3). Double-click the downloaded file to begin installation. After agreeing with the terms and conditions, a menu will instruct you to type the letter of the floppy drive. To determine what your floppy disk drive letter is, go to "My Computer" and it should be displayed in there. This installation will prompt for six formatted 1.44 MB disks sequentially where the installation files will be stored.
- 4). Label each disk as it is created. This is important for later.
- 1). Visit Microsoft's Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility page (see Resources section).
- 2). Click the "Download" button to begin downloading the utility. If it does not begin automatically within 30 seconds, select the "Start Download" link to force the download to begin.
- 3). Double-click the file to begin the installation. A pop-up window will instruct you to insert setup boot disk number 6 created in Section 1. The registry repair utility will be saved to this disk for use later on.
- 1). Insert setup boot disk number 1 in the computer with the faulty registry and boot up the machine.
- 2). The system will begin installing the required files to repair the system. Each setup boot disk will be required for complete installation.
- 3). Select the "Repair" option when prompted to either install Windows XP or repair the existing installation. The Windows 2000 Repair Utility will now attempt to repair the registry. If successful, remove the disk and boot into Windows as usual. If unsuccessful, call Microsoft Support for further assistance (see Resources section).
